ISI’s commentary for inspectors on interpreting the regulatory requirements set out in the Independent School Standards , provides further information on how issues around racism and diversity are currently considered. ISI have said that the latest update includes:
“Greater detail in relation to how racism is covered by the Independent School Standards, for example by standard 3(j) which requires that teaching does not discriminate against pupils contrary to Part 6 of the Equality Act 2010; standard 10 (bullying) and 34 (leadership and management). Note in particular the expectation that schools should be alert to practices, behaviours and interactions which may create or allow a hostile environment for pupils with protected characteristics and should intervene through appropriate action with a view to creating a positive and inclusive culture in which every pupil can feel valued and flourish”.
