SEND Provision for Excellence in Learning

Halcyon’s admissions policy asks that all students have a strong academic background to manage the needs of a challenging IB curriculum With that framework, we are resourced to provide accommodations for a range of frequently occurring SEND needs for neuro-divergent learners, and we provide wellbeing services for those with social, emotional and mental health needs.

We believe in drawing out the unique potential of each student, and it is our mission to unlock that potential through personalised educational approaches and support frameworks within our school. We are committed to creating an inclusive learning environment that supports the diverse needs of all of our students. All our students are valued members of our school community. To achieve Halcyon’s vision of an excellent IB education, every child is encouraged to participate fully in all aspects of school life: we provide a safe and welcoming environment where every child can grow and all contributions are valued and respected. Our SEND provision is an integral part of this classroom practice.

How We Support SEND

As part of our commitment to excellence in the IB curriculum, we use personalised Inclusion Guides and differentiated lesson planning to ensure that all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The Learning Team works closely with the SEND Learning Coach, parents/carers, and other relevant professionals to decide if a pupil has SEND, what their needs are, what outcomes are to be expected, and what provisions may be needed to support the student.

Supporting SEND pupils is a collective responsibility across the whole school. The primary methods of support provided by Halcyon include:

Classroom Support: Full-time education within the classroom, complemented by additional help from the SEND teacher

Differentiated Lessons: Employing different instructional methods, materials, or assessments to meet the needs of all students

Digital Tools: Dedicated to using technology to boost accessibility and enhance learning outcomes as a 1:1 digital school

Small Group Sessions: Targeted support in small groups or 1:1 settings

In-Class Assistance: Support from a teacher within the classroom to aid learning

Specialist Support: Access to specialists within the classroom or outside the classroom

We invest in ongoing professional development for our teachers, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to implement inclusive teaching strategies and understand the needs of students with SEND. This includes having knowledge of, for example, dealing with communication or processing difficulties, children on the autism spectrum, dyslexia, and ADHD, in order to deliver effective interventions based on best practice.

Our Wellbeing Team is trained in restorative practices to ensure that the wellbeing needs of SEND students are fully met. This approach of restorative practice focuses on building strong relationships and creating safe, supportive environments where students feel heard and valued. The team works with students to develop emotional resilience, conflict resolution, and maintaining a positive experience that promotes overall mental and emotional wellbeing.
