Jersey College for Girls

Bursaries are available for students whose parents, without financial assistance, would not be able to send their daughter to the College.

The student must show a very high degree of both ability and motivation, as well as the right attitude towards learning, to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by Jersey College for Girls.

Bursaries are awarded on a full, half or partial basis.

The administration of the various Bursaries available for students at Jersey College for Girls is handled by the Clerk to the Governing Body and the Principal on behalf of the Governing Body and the Trusts named below. The role of the Principal is to help match demand for financial assistance with supply. The final decision will always remain the Trustees’ in accordance with the terms of their trust instrument and their duties under law.

All applications are treated in the strictest of confidence.

Upon completion of the application form (available to download electronically below or from the College), applicants will be informed as soon as possible of the recommendations approved by the various Trustees.

Eligibility Criteria
As a guide total parental/household income in excess of £60,000 would normally not enable a student to benefit from the majority of the bursaries outlined.

How to Apply for a Bursary
Parents seeking a bursary should complete a form, ask for it to be certified by the tax office and then return it to the College. All income must be shown on the form, whether it is taxed in Jersey or not. Note: The Income Tax Department will not be able to certify your form unless they have received your completed tax return.

Parents who are proprietors, partners, directors or substantial shareholders in any business undertaking, or trust, or who exercise control over that undertaking should submit a complete copy of the previous year’s certified accounts together with the certified form. As is the case with student awards any benefit accruing from a business or a trust will be judged as income, whether that benefit is remitted to the person concerned or not.

Where a student’s parents are divorced, parents should also provide a copy of any court orders relating to maintenance and care and control.

Parents applying for short term financial help should write a letter to accompany their form explaining the cause of the alteration in their level of income and submit supporting documentation where it is available.

Parents who have more than one daughter at JCG should complete one form only.
If an application is successful parents must complete a new assessment form each year to confirm that their financial circumstances have not changed.

When Should I Apply?
Parents may apply for short term help at any point during the year. Normally, applications for long term bursaries will be considered in February for an award the following September so parents seeking assistance for Year 10 should apply in Year 9. Please note that it may take several weeks for your application to be processed. Completed application forms, certified by the Tax Office will need to be returned to the College by the beginning of February. In order to be able to meet the deadline, parents will need to ensure that their income tax return, showing the previous year’s income and the application form are completed and submitted to the Tax Office as early as possible in January.

Late applications will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Terms and Conditions
All bursaries are subject to annual review. The size of the award is related to the level of parental income and so may vary from year to year (or cease altogether if there has been a significant increase). Bursaries are awarded subject to satisfactory attendance, behaviour and academic performance. Awards may be withdrawn from students who fail to meet these conditions. Awards are decided by the Principal acting on the advice of the Finance Sub-Committee of the Governing Body.

THE BURSARIES

Howard Leopold Davis Scholarship Trust

This Scholarship gives assistance to students who must be born in the Island of Jersey or, if not, one of their parents must be so. The student must have attended a school in Jersey for not less than two years to qualify.

The Trustees may decide to meet the full or part of the cost of the student’s attendance based upon the personal circumstances of the applicants.

The Dome Charitable Trust

This Scholarship scheme commenced in September 2011. At the end of the five year period the Scholarship Scheme will be reviewed.

The Scholarship will be available to an able student whose parents, without financial assistance, would not be able to send their daughter to College. The student must show a very high degree of both ability and motivation, as well as the right attitude towards learning, to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by Jersey College for Girls.

If a suitable candidate is found each year, the Trustees will award a Scholarship and this will cover the period until the year in which she becomes eighteen, subject to continued motivation and the parents’ financial circumstances being similar to those when the Scholarship was awarded.

Awards under the previous schemes will be honoured.

JCG Bursaries

Each year the College puts aside funds to provide students with financial assistance. Bursaries of between 10% and 100% are given following completion of the application form.

JCG Foundation Bursary

This Bursary may decide to meet the full or part of the cost of a student’s attendance at the College based on the personal circumstances of the applicants.

Financial Assistance for School Trips

The fund exists to assist students wishing to access the wide range of school trips and expeditions.   The maximum monetary value a student can receive per academic year is £1,000.   The award is dependent upon the household income not exceeding £60,000 per annum. If a student wishes to request financial assistance for more than one trip, this will be considered up to the maximum of £1,000 in total for all trips in the academic year.

For those students receiving a bursary, or where the annual household income is below £60,000 applications for financial assistance up to a maximum of £1,000 per academic year, should be made by completing  and returning the Financial Assistance form.  The application will then be considered by the Principal and the Finance Committee and the Clerk will inform parents/guardians of the decision.
